12th ANNUAL THUNDERJET CHALLENGE |
Race Report |
3/27/04
- Due to a number of circumstances,
attendance was relatively low for the running of |
Greenbrier Raceway's
12th Annual THUNDERJET CHALLENGE, but this is not to say the race was
any |
less
exciting. With the total field of 10
entries almost evenly split between Pros & Rookies, this made |
for
some tricky driving, along with ever
changing strategies. |
Round 1 |
The random pick driver
order system worked very well for the start of Greenbrier's TJC. |
A good mix of racers
kept everyone on their toes throughout the entire round. While the younger |
and
first time entries were busy getting the feel of a non-magnet race car, the more experienced |
drivers were (for a lack of a better
term) trying
to keep out of the way. And they did a
good job of it… |
among
all the havoc, many of the regulars
were able to kept pace with the normal race laps, turning in solid |
47- 50 laps per segment. |
Another
thing that became evident rather quickly was just how grueling this race was
actually |
going
to be… not because of the
Rookies, but the lack of entries. With EVERYONE filling Marshal positions, |
there would be very little
time to relax. |
At
the end of round 1, the fun really
started as testosterone levels between John Peckham and |
Steve Dickinson started
getting a little thick (Steve as defending Champion and John with the most |
TJC wins under his belt
– that kind of stuff).
What started this "verbal play", you ask? … at this point, John |
& Steve were
literally dead even TIED for the
current first place position with BOTH holding 197 laps and |
12 sections!!!! |
Break |
The mid-race / lunch (dinner) break was somewhat
extended, again due to the lack of
entries. |
Most everyone needed a
good rest before round 2. |
After
2 sheet pizzas, 100 wings, and a number of door prizes (thanks to this years Featured |
Sponsors) were devoured, the few that wanted to keep their “trigger
finger” warm found their way to |
the Go-Kart track (most remember the
incident a few years ago with people practicing on the main |
track between rounds - no
longer is anyone allowed any practice on the main track). |
Round 2 |
Round
2 started off smooth… many of the
rookies now had their driver “wings” and were much |
less
of a factor. The only incident would
be in heat 5 when John Peckham’s Jag would hop down the |
main straight into Jeff
Eve’s lane, giving Jeff a
"freebie" lap. |
Also
in heat 5, Steve Dickinson would have
a bit of trouble getting his rhythm back and would end |
up turning his lowest
laps yet – 47. |
In
heat 6, John would finish up with
another 50 laps, practically
guaranteeing the winners spot |
(no
one had been able to break the 50 lap barrier). Just two heats later (heat 8 - race final), Steve raked |
in 52 laps for his bid
to the winners circle (anyone remember the part where John
gave away a lap to |
Jeff :-)) |
As
the laps were tallied – John had 198, Steve had 198, John had 27 sections, Steve parked on |
the track at the 37
section mark – taking home his second TJC trophy in a
row!!!! |
There
has been some great, close racing at
Greenbrier Raceway in the past, but
after over |
8 hours of racing to
have only 10 TRACK SECTIONS between cars – now that, my friend,
is RACING!!!! |
