  8th ANNUAL THUNDERJET CHALLENGE
  Race Report

4/29/00 – "Not one race or track record could withstand the running of Greenbrier Raceway’s
   8th Annual THUNDERJET CHALLENGE."

  ROUND 1

As mentioned,  this years Thunderjet Challenge broke  (and in some instances, DISTROYED)
every conceivable race/track record previously held.  Race attendance,  most heat laps,  most segment
(Round) laps,  total race laps, …  even the number of sponsors and prizes awarded topped any prior race
  recorded!!!
Starting in ROUND 1,  it was Paul Graziano who would lead the first lap of a record 24-car field.
Steve Dickinson would quickly put in his bid for the race turning 53 laps  (tying the record)  in his first
2 heats,  followed by Larry Weaver and John Peckham who both would also tie the record during Round 1.
While the race for first was fierce,  the real race to take shape in Round 1 would be for 8th position
(remember, only the top 8 would enter into ROUND 2).  This contest would inevitably come down to two…
Paul Graziano and Rick Rumpf.  By the end of their 3rd heat,  it was Paul with a 2-lap margin over Rick.
  However,  Heat 4 would show Rick with a final of 50 laps / 47 sections over Paul’s 48 laps / 10 sections.
This would put Rick in 8th place over Paul by only 37 TRACK SECTIONS!!!
To make matters worse,  it was then someone remembered that one of Rick’s final laps were
“stolen” when another car went threw his lap counter  (legal under enduro rules).  This technically “robbed”
Paul from 8th…  putting ½ the “Graziano Brothers” Lola Race Team from ‘Jersey back on the trailer.

  ROUND 2

Entering Round 2,  the top 8  (in current position order)  would be John Peckham,  Steve Dickinson,
Larry Weaver,  Dave Failing,  Jeff Eve,  Guy Graziano,  Mike King,  and Rick Rumpf.
In Round 2,  the story to develop here would start when Guy Graziano would have all sorts of
problems getting his Lola through turn 1 in the blue lane.  It wasn’t until ¾ threw heat 2  (John Peckham
started having problems in turn 1 also)  that it was discovered someone had run a “Sucker Car”
(unlimited)  during break time…  pulling a rail in the blue lane up.
Being almost 20 minutes into round 2,  in fairness it was decided ‘the rail stays’  (vs. fixing the lane
and starting the round over).  This would,  in a sense,  place a large bump just coming out of the main straight
on blue.  Now the trick would be to see who could negotiate the hazard the best.
All had problems,  but it was Dave Failing and Mike King who seem to have the best set-up for a high
rail (Mike actually ran his best race heat on “bumpy blue”…  go figure).
Dave,  once finished with blue  (good run @ 50 laps),  would give it his all and pump out a record 54 laps
on yellow…  more than enough to put him on top for round 2.
With good numbers for round 1 and a top finish in round 2,  the totals would show Dave Failing’s
move from a ½ race 4th place position to a record breaking 1st place finish…  marking Dave Failing as this
  years Thunderjet Challenge Champion!!!

Greenbrier Raceway would like to thank everyone involved in making the 8th Annual Greenbrier
