  6th ANNUAL THUNDERJET CHALLENGE
  Race Report
4/25/98 - Once again,  a hefty field of stock T-Jets warmed the rails at Greenbrier Raceway
for the running of the 6th Annual THUNDERJET CHALLENGE.

As the name implies,  Greenbrier's Thunderjet Challenge is just that...  an Aurora Thunderjet
race using 95% Box Stock T-Jets.  Some aftermarket replacement parts are allowed due to vehicle
age, but in general,  all cars are to be in #7 condition or better.
Being a mini-enduro,  many 'enduro' style regulations are enforced…  such as no lap corrections,
no track calls,  and all maintenance to vehicles allowed ONLY under 'Green'  (driver's race time).
In the past,  Greenbrier's Thunderjet Challenge had been raced in two separate rounds for all
drivers.  This year the format was changed due to race time / number of entries to allow only the top
eight racers from Round 1 into the second half...  or Main.
With 10-minute heats,  per lane,  per driver…  this would put the total race time for the top eight
racers at 80 minutes (10 min x 4 lanes x 2 rounds).  The total from BOTH rounds would then be
added / calculated as the driver's total race score / laps.

Unlike last year,  conditions for the 6th Annual Thunderjet Challenge were perfect...
making for the smoothest,  most enjoyable event to date.
The 18 car field included many HOSCAR members and locals,  along with the 'Jersey Boys',
Paul and Guy Graziano,  and "HO-Slotcars" DL owner,  Andy Meyer.

  ROUND 1

The first group to race would be Andy Morrell,  Scott Sylvester,  Jeff Collins,  and Hoss Phoenix...
who would quickly set the pace at an average 42 laps per heat.
Group 2 would be John Maddock,  Rick Rumpf,  Larry Weaver,  and John Durbin.  In this segment,
all would watch as Larry upped the ante…  running 46,  47,  45,  and another 47 laps.
The third group up was Andy Meyer,  Guy Graziano,  Rick Kibler,  Vincent King,  and Steve Dickinson.
This segment would start out much as expected with last years champ,  Guy Graziano,  pushing the
lap average into the 47 range.  Suddenly,  in heat 3,  Guy took a hard hit to the nose of his lt. blue Lola.
With no time for repairs,  Guy could only watch as the Lola 'skipped' along…  dropping his laps to the
  low 40's.
Meanwhile,  (after a sit-out)  it was Steve's turn to turn up the heat with two 50 lap runs.
But again,  during his 3rd run,  fate would once again strike as the rear axle of Steve's "J" car started
slipping sideways…  just enough to spin the crown gear.
As Steve quickly brought his Ford "J" to a stop and pushed the axle back into place,  by the
end of heat 4,  this would become a routine - 'Run some laps… Smack the side of the car… run some laps...'.
Persistence would pay off for Steve,  however,  as he would finish with a pair of 48's…  good
enough to place him as the current leader,  and a good contender for the Main / Round 2.
The forth and final group to run would be Paul Graziano,  John Peckham,  Mike King,
Tim Catterson,  and Jeff Eve.  With 3 out of 5 previous wins in this event,  everyone knew the familiar
red Jaguar of John's would be a force to reckon with,  along with another race favorite,  Jeff Eve...
this year sporting a Ford GT instead of his usual Lola.
In the end,  John would cash in with a 51,  49,  51,  and 50...  moving him into the current #1 spot.
Jeff would have problems in heat 1 turning a disappointing 42 laps,  only to come back with a 49,  and
a pair of 47's...  more than enough for 3rd place,  and the Main.

  ROUND 2

As the race continued,  the final eight drivers for Round 2 would be  (in current position order):
  John P.,  Steve D.,  Jeff E.,  Larry W.,  Rick R.,  Paul G., John D.,  and Guy G..
To highlight:  Though Guy would never get his Lola to stop hopping,  he would "shake,  rattle,
and roll" up one position to a 7th place finish.
The battle for 3rd was fierce as new-comer,  Larry Weaver,  squeezed a little more from his
Ferrari...  bumping out Jeff by only 1 lap!!!  Steve would finally get to change the crown on his "J" in
heat 1,  costing him a good 5 laps.  This would be a small price to pay,  however,  as he was again running
back into the 50's...  enough for him to hold 2nd place.

All this would leave John Peckham to take home this years championship,  as well as a new event record!!!
